Luxury problems

The artwork Luxury problems is an intermedia, data-driven animation that combines fine arts, technology and economic data, transforming historical fluctuations in the price of gold into a breathing image, expressing the intensity and fluidity of the market.
The image is a digital collage created by synthesizing details from four photographs of gold jewelry from the collection of the AMTH (catalog numbers: Β80, ΜΘ8080, ΜΚ2050, ΜΘ22556). Subsequently, through the Processing software, this image comes to life in accordance with fluctuations in the price of gold, transforming the data into visual information and focusing on the experience of the market as a living organism. In the artwork, historical gold prices (data from the website: Measuring worth, for the period: 1833–2025) are converted into log returns to capture their relative fluctuations. These changes determine the anxiety, which in turn determines the intensity of breathing visualized through the movement of the image, bringing the market to life and reflecting it. Luxury Problems was created within the context of the research program “Algorithmic
reading of antiquity: Digital visualization inspired by the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki,” part of the project “Creative coding and algorithmic design for artists”, of the Department of Fine Arts and Art Sciences, School of Fine Arts, University of Ioannina. Presented at the periodic group exhibition Dilogues at the AMTH. 2026.
